  7. Sunnyvale, Calif. -- March 31, 1992 -- Novell Inc., today announced it is
  8. expanding NetWare Communication Services, its open communications services
  9. platform for enterprise network integration, with the announcements of:
  10.  
  11.   ~  NetWare for SAA v1.2, Novell's premier LAN-to-host connectivity software;
  12.  
  13.   ~  NetWare Asynchronous Communication Services (NACS) v3.0, a NetWare
  14.      Loadable Module (NLM) that enables NetWare users to access and share
  15.      communications resources such as modems, asynchronous hosts and X.25
  16.      network services;
  17.  
  18.   ~  NLMs, hardware and software connectivity products developed by nine
  19.      third-party vendors which leverage these new releases to provide complete
  20.      business-wide solutions.

  22. "NetWare Communication Services provides an open development environment for
  23. vendors to build the business-wide connectivity solutions our customers have
  24. requested," said Ray Noorda, Novell president and CEO.  "This platform is open
  25. to anyone who wishes to integrate their communications product into the
  26. NetWare environment and take advantage of the performance, security, name
  27. services and network management features we provide."

  29. "At Tangram, we were particularly interested in the LAN-to-host connectivity
  30. that NetWare for SAA delivers, " said Chris Jesse, Tangram's president and
  31. CEO.  "NetWare Communication Services provided us with the stable development
  32. platform we were looking for to port AM:PM, our software distribution and data
  33. collection package, into the NetWare environment."

  41. NetWare Communication Services is an open network integration platform
  42. available to all third-party developers; future enhancements will be announced
  43. as they become available.

  46. and software solutions that support the NetWare Communication Services
  47. platform.  These products either leverage NetWare for SAA v1.2 as the
  48. LAN-to-host connection/data transport  for their products, or leverage NACS
  49. v3.0 as the asynchronous communications link to the enterprise.

  106. NetWare Communication Services Manager v1.0
  107.  
  108. Novell today announced it will begin shipping the NetWare Communication
  109. Services Manager (CSM) v1.0, its Windows-based network management application
  110. for managing Novell communications services including NetWare for SAA v1.2 and
  111. NACS v3.0 from anywhere on a NetWare network.
  112.  
  113. The NetWare CSM v1.0 is based on Novell's NetWare Management System (NMS) core
  114. technology, allowing it to operate concurrently with other Novell network
  115. management tools.
  116.  
  117. "The NetWare Communication Services Manager was designed specifically to meet
  118. the network management challenges created as users extend their network
  119. services beyond the LAN to include IBM connectivity and enterprise
  120. communications, "  said Gerry Machi, vice president and general manager,
  121. NetWare Systems Group--Sunnyvale.

  123. "We support a large number of users.  Sometimes in the past when we received a
  124. tech-support call for communication services it could be difficult to identify
  125. the source of the problem.  Now with the CSM, we can see exactly what is going
  126. on anywhere on the network; there are no 'blind spots',"  said Dan Kohner,
  127. network services team leader for the University of Texas/MD Anderson Cancer
  128. Center.  "The CSM became the missing patch we used to sew our network
  129. environment into one big quilt."

  131. CSM  provides a comprehensive set of network management tools for fault,
  132. performance and configuration management for any service built on the NetWare
  133. Communication Services platform.  The product minimizes service downtime
  134. through real-time fault management.  It immediately notifies network managers
  135. of NetWare for SAA and NACS events through audible and visual alerts.  For
  136. events requiring intervention, it suggests diagnostic and remedial actions.

  138. CSM supports Window's Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE).  This allows statistics to
  139. be linked to  DDE applications such as Microsoft Excel spreadsheets.  In
  140. addition, CSM provides enhanced security through its ability to access and
  141. manipulate audit trail logs of communication services usage.  Also, and Event
  142. Monitor can be configured to receive real-time notification of potential
  143. security violations.

  145. NetWare Communication Services
  146.  
  147. Novell first announced the concept of NetWare Communication Services in June,
  148. 1990 and began delivering the first modules of the platform with the shipment
  149. of NetWare for SAA 1.0  in May, 1991.  NetWare Communications Services
  150. products give users access to host resources and wide area networks.  It's the
  151. first completely integrated LAN communications system designed to support any
  152. combination of LAN-to-host, LAN-to-LAN or remote LAN access services.

  154. Pricing and Availability
  155.  
  156. NetWare Communication Services Manager v1.0 will be available in May, 1992. 
  157. Effective from the first customer shipment through July 31, 1992 CSM will be
  158. available to Novell's distribution channel at a discounted price.  End users
  159. should expect to see discounts of up to 30 percent off the standard list
  160. pricing (United States and Canada) of $4,995.  For pricing outside the United
  161. States and Canada, customers should contact their local Novell authorized
  162. Reseller.
